Aristeia (ἀριστεία) – An ancient Greek term meaning “excellence”. Often used to refer to a hero’s finest moments when they are overcome with great strength and passion; a moment of beauty and level-headedness among the chaotic and adrenaline-ridden battlefield.

This woodcut and print depicts a place where I have felt my own moments of aristeia: longboarding. The addrenaline as I am riding down a hill is scary and exciting all at once and often makes me feel a rush of passion and creativity.
The koi fish represent this paradox of beauty and chaos. The symbols swirling around the fish are a personal signature based off the logogram language from the movie, “Arrival.” The rose in the center, a unique mark on each print, represent the idea that some of this beauty comes from the individuality of each situation where one feels a sense of aristeia.
